New SmartCool: A synergy of advanced precision cooling technology
Leeds, UK, February 18, 2009 -

SmartCool has been launched into the data centre and computer room cooling market by leading air conditioning manufacturer Airedale. SmartCool is Airedale’s next generation of precision cooling solutions, capable of significantly reducing energy consumption and maximising uptime.
In IT and other critical environments, SmartCool will deliver efficient and intelligent cooling of fluctuating heat loads to maintain precise control. Within its sleek, compact exterior lies a synergy of advanced technology and cutting-edge components, creating a sophisticated and highly flexible system.
A host of energy saving design factors such as direct drive AC fans with EC motor options; ‘blow through’ design and efficient ‘A’ frame coil; up to eight stages of DX cooling and optional inverter driven compressors contribute to a 30% increase in system efficiency compared with Airedale’s previous generation close control units.
A choice of seven system types are available, in DX R410A (air/water cooled, 60 – 130kW) or chilled water (60 – 150kW). Dual cool options offer built-in redundancy, with both DX and chilled water within the same case, and a free-cooling variant. A raft of state-of-the-art options optimise efficiency and control allowing the best solution to be selected for the application. SmartCool can also be matched with Airedale remote condensers and free-cooling chillers.
The glycol free-cooling dual cool variant uses 46% less power than the equivalent air cooled DX system. At a nominal £0.11/kWHour this equates to a saving of approximately £8000/year or 31,000kg of CO2.
SmartCool’s control logic, dual power and dual cool options within the case are designed to meet the N+1 and 2N redundancy requirements of critical data centre applications. Economical on room space requirements, SmartCool offers 13% more cooling kW/m² than previously achieved by Airedale close control units.
Speed-controllable, direct drive AC fans feature optional EC fan technology for greater efficiency and allow optional automatic adjustment of air volume when faced with variable system resistance.
The first release of SmartCool features a downflow configuration. This has a ‘blow through’ design which, enhanced by the hydrophilic, high performance ‘A’ frame coils, allows more even air distribution into the floor void and helps reduce sound levels. An upflow version of SmartCool will follow in a future release.
Up to eight stages of DX cooling is achieved with tandem scroll compressor, for increased part load efficiency. Sensible heat ratio control with minimum re-heat ensures 80% less power is absorbed during the de-humidification cycle.
Optional (30 – 90Hz) inverter driven compressors offer fully modulated cooling from 25 -100% giving higher levels of precision, enhanced part load efficiency and a starting current just 10% that of a traditional fixed speed scroll compressor.
Further significant savings in energy are achievable through options such as variable humidity control; efficient hot gas re-heat; a high efficiency de-humidification circuit and, in selected SmartCool applications, reduced air volume.
