World Refrigeration Day 2019

Benjamin Hitchcox is spending a week with Airedale for work experience, so we asked him to find out some refrigeration facts for World Refrigeration Day! Here’s what he found:

I am currently completing work experience at Airedale, so being a newcomer to the industry, I have limited knowledge about the specialist products that Airedale expertly manufacture. But I do understand the importance of refrigeration within our society and why World Refrigeration Day is of huge importance.

Wednesday 26th June 2019 is the first annual World Refrigeration Day, and to celebrate this event here at Airedale we will be holding a whole day revolving around this campaign to increase recognition within the workplace.

At Airedale International, we are proud to sponsor the newly developed World Refrigeration Campaign. Refrigeration stems back to when the first known artificial form of refrigeration was discovered by William Cullen at the University of Glasgow in 1748. Approximately 271 years later in 2019, we can finally dedicate a day to this revolutionary discovery for the very first time.

It is evident that the process of refrigeration has been neglected over the past couple of centuries, and it is important to note that the process of refrigeration is such a key component of everyday life; it is truly difficult to picture what modern life would be like without it. In 2005 it was claimed that a domestic refrigerator is present in 99.5% of American homes and there are almost 10 million refrigeration units sold annually within America alone.

‘But why have a day dedicated to refrigeration?’

There is a lot more to refrigeration than meets the eye, the process is not just for cooling or chilling food but a whole range of applications within different sectors.
Refrigeration provides an increasingly important role within our society; in data centers- to protect mass data storages worldwide, healthcare- to aid ease of controlling the ambient temperatures in the workplace and even in developing countries- primarily for the preservation of food and medicine which aid a developing country either return or grow to a state of self-sufficiency.

As a regular user of a mobile phone and computer system, the importance of refrigeration on my life cannot be stressed enough. Everything I do online whether it is messaging a friend, sharing content on social media or even gaming, I rely on refrigeration to preserve my online profile which is stored in data centers worldwide. There are over 3 million of these data centers in America alone which hold precious information. Airedale works to protect this data by creating cooling solutions, and has supplied many different products to these centers over the years. A risk of overheating within these data centers is minimized by Airedale’s cooling solutions, so these products act as protectors of the data centres and help to guard masses of information,  just like my online persona which is safe and secure.

Even if you have little to no experience within the refrigeration industry like me, you can still participate within World Refrigeration Day by just appreciating the products that; keep you cool, maintain your food’s temperature and even ice-cream dispensers as they are all tailored using refrigerants to make you, as the consumer comfortable, safe and happy.
